Just about every small business owner or entrepreneur I know seems to get people wanting to “pick your brain”, or asking fifty questions so they can go off and do their own thing.


If you haven’t worked out an easy way to help them and convert them into paying clients, you are missing out on business.


So, how can you turn these "freebies" into paying clients?


Here are 5 tips on ways to provide quality freebies and avoid undervaluing your business:


REMEMBER, THIS IS YOUR BUSINESS.



You're in it because you're passionate about what you do.


But you're also in it to make money.


If you add up the number of people who question you at social gatherings, church, or the grocery store and multiply that number by your hourly rate, you're losing money.


That's not to say that you should turn into an asshole and stop giving advice altogether.


But it is important to your business that people recognize value in what you do.


NOT TODAY



Gently, yet firmly, use the power of saying “not today” and decline to give advice as you usually do.


Begin the process of moving prospect from FREE CLIENT to PRE-CLIENT.


Give them your FB/IG/Website pages URL where they can find answers to all kinds of questions and continue to get free advice.


Or create a simple “how-to” ebook to give people that want to do it themselves.


SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TIME



Encourage these leads to contact your office to make an appointment.


If they follow through, give them a discounted rate on their first visit.


Be sure to also ask them for the names and contact information of at least 2 people who can benefit from the same consultation they received.


HELP OTHERS WITHOUT HURTING YOURSELF



There will be some people asking for advice but still not able to pay your rates that you still want to help.


The key to helping them is to find a way to provide them with resources, without tying up all of your time with providing that help.


DON’T LEAVE THEM HANGING



The goal is to give others some help, but do it in the least time-intensive way possible.


Make it possible for people to come back when they are wanting professional help.


The more you give away, the more you get.
